Today, from 7.00 to 23.00, and tomorrow, from 7.00 to 15.00, in Italy we vote for the referendum on the cut of the
parliamentarians, with the alignments in favor of Yes and No.
This is a confirmatory constitutional referendum, therefore, since there is no quorum, even in the event of a YES
victory over the NO by only one vote, Articles 56, 57 and 59 of the Constitution would be amended. In the event of a
NO victory, everything would remain as it is now.
In the first case, starting from the next legislature, there would be a cut, within the Parliament, of 230 deputies and
115 senators.
The question on the card is this:
“Would you change the text of the constitutional law concerning Amendments to articles 56, 57 and 59
of the Constitution regarding the reduction of the number of parliamentarians
approved by Parliament and published in the Official Gazette of the Italian Republic
– General Series – n. 240 of 12 October 2019?”
This referendum was made necessary following the presentation of 71 signatures by some senators, in accordance
with the provisions of art. 138 of the Constitution, after the proposed law amending the Constitution
in the four compliant parliamentary readings did not obtain the qualified majority
necessary to approve the text. In case of victory of the YES, it will be necessary to modify the current
electoral law in force, redesigning the colleges, given the lower number of
parliamentarians to be elected.
Finally, elections will also take place in seven regions to elect their own
governor and councilors, in 18 provincial capitals and 3 regional capitals (1,179 municipalities in all),
administrative elections will be held.
At 19.00 today there was a turnout of about 30% of those entitled to vote.
